OCR AS Level Photography
Controlled Assignment- prepare a comprehensive sketch book + 5 hour controlled test to bring ideas to realisation.

2. Coursework Portfolio- Aim to finish by 23rd Feb ( after half term)
This should display your exploration, research, acquisition of skills & techniques. You must analyse your own work and the work of others.

Your Portfolio should show how you have developed as a photographer and the new skills you have learned. It should also show that you have a greater understanding of the development of photography historically and that you have developed interests in other photographers work and certain styles of photographers.

You should have at least the following:

Photograms.
Dark room work, contact sheets & prints.
Depth of field pictures -
Shutter speed pictures.
Use of colour V black & white- contrast
Flash v natural light photographs.
Work of an existing photographer that you have been influenced by.

For all of these points you should have examples from both of the themes of Texture & Portraiture. Each sections should have images from existing photographers that have inspired you. There should be written explanations about how manipulating the framing, compostion & camera settings achieve different outcomes.

Each double page in your sketch book should consist of small images of shoots that you have taken part in, you should choose one or two of your favourites and include an image from another photographer and answer the following points ( they may not all be relevant). Refer to my blog and yours to help you with this.
Photographers intentions
1. what are the photographers aims?
2. Who is the image for? More than one audience?
3. Does the image successfully communicate the photographers aims and intentions?
Analysing the image.
1. What type of photography is this? documentary, reportage, portrait, fine art, advertising, editorial?
2. What is included in the photograph?
3. What message does it convey?
4. What techniques do you think have been used to make the image?
5. Has the image been staged?
6. Has the image been manipulated in any way?
Personal Response.
1. How does the image make you feel?
2. Does it remind you of anything? personal experiences, other photographers work.

21st January

Well done for some good work last week. Follow this link and pick your two favourite images, that you took. If you find this link doesn't work immediately, try again this evening as it is taking ages to upload! Use the sheets given to you previously ( and also on here) about how to write about images, thinking about the tech spec and the imagery that you have created. Please put the work on your blog and email me at shsgmedia@mac.com, to let me know you have done it. You should also start printing your work out, some of these slow shutter speeds would look great blown up and you are best taking them to snappy snaps on a usb stick or emailing them to photobox or snapfish. The school printer won't really do them justice.


In lew of tomorrows lesson, please find a portrait by an established photographer and try to re create what they have done. Think about the way Rankin worked in that documentary, having the image right in front of him as he tried to copy the aesthetic behind it.

Next week we will be thinking about portraiture from the perspective of parts of the body, old ladies hands with lots of rings on, tattoos or piercings, braces, feet, back of the head, tummy buttons- everyones is different!

Start trying to look at bodies differently.

Portraiture

We looked at commonly posed questions about Portraiture today. We read this article, click here if you didn't get a copy.

Tomorrow you are all to bring a favourite object or hat or scarf. We will move on from looking at lighting and think about how to convey your subjects personality in the image. If you can find an example that inspire you, bring that as well. We shall also be considering the vanishing point and the use of frames within frames.

Next week we will be examining parts of the body, tatoos, scars etc so get thinking about possible subjects.

Portraits

A good session on portraits on 8th January. Your photos are held on G drive-communications-photography-year13. Please ensure your download and print your photos and not someone elses. Put them into iphoto then-photos-show photo info- and this will show you the aperture and shutter speed that has been used. Make a note of this info when you stick your photos in your scrapbook.

Please ensure you attend Wednesday lunchtime and Thursday after school this week. Please bring all your photos, scrapbooks and money for scrap books if you still owe for them.

Christmas work

You need to take as many pictures as possible, remember the themes, Texture and Portraiture.

Texture: frost, snow?, Christmas trees and baubles, food, leftovers with napkins, think in terms of contrast in both colour and texture. Interior and exterior, natural and manmade.

Portraiture: really good time for family portraits, try to avoid the formal ones but get people unawares, older people asleep, childrens delight at opening presents, playing etc. Try unusual angles, from behind, over the shoulder, childs eye view etc.

Research existing photographers work and try to get inspiration from them, you can then put their images in your sketch book alongside your own.

You should use the holidays to get your sketch books up and running, you should be taking some good images now.

18th December

You should come to the lesson in the Media studio with all your darkroom notes, prints and photograms and your sketch book. You need to start putting your sketch book together.

You will be presenting your own portraiture images to the class and we will discuss your work.

Please ensure you bring material to the lesson, it would be best to put it on your blog then we can see it on the whiteboard.
